Game Recap

Tough loss for the JV team to our bitter rival Burlingame, ending JV’s 5 game winning streak. The Bearcats had a tough time stopping Burlingame’s rushing attack early in the game, eventually settling down and slowing down the running attack. The offense had their chances early in the game to score and keep the game close, but were unable to score in the red zone. The offense eventually scored in the fourth quarter, on a great pass from Luke Bergstrom to Lucas Castillo for a 60 yard TD reception, but the score was to late to make a difference in the game. The Bearcats look to bounce back next week against Capuchino for the Division Title. Go Bearcats!

Game Recap

Another great win by the JV squad as they extend their winning streak to 5 games. The Bearcats controlled both sides of the ball, as they completely dominated the visiting Vikings. The Defense pitched their second shut out of the season, as they controlled the line of scrimmage with their swarming defense, creating multiple turnovers, and completely overwhelming the visiting Vikings. The rushing game once again controlled the game, led by Omar Maithaluni, who led the Bearcats with two rushing TD’s. With the win the Bearcats are 4-0 in Division play and 6-2 for the season. The Bearcats look to extend their winning streak to 6 games as they prepare for next weeks Little Little Big Game against Burlingame. Go Bearcats!

Game Recap

San Mateo got off to a quick start against Mills High School Friday night and held on at the end to win 30-21. On the Vikings 3rd play from scrimmage, Ari Blemur hit the MHS quarterback as he was attempting to pass and the ball floated downfield. Several Bearcats had a chance and it was Gustavos Cisneros who came up with the interception at the    Mills 25. Five plays later senior D’hey Allen ran 15 yards to score the Bearcats first touchdown. After the teams traded possessions, Mills took over on the 50 and with a drive that included a 32 yard pass play, they scored a TD at the opening of the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 7 all. San Mateo answered quickly however on a beautiful 51 yard pass play from senior QB Jose Ontiveros to junior WR Noa Mandorf for Mandorf’s first career Varsity touchdown. Ontiveros’s pass hit the wide-open and speedy Mandorf in full stride at the Mills 15 and SMHS took a 14-7 advantage with 9:24 left in the half.

San Mateo took over after Mills had to punt on their next possession and the Bearcat’s reached the Viking 13 on a 24-yard pass play from Ontiveros to Senior Jake Jeffries, but the drive stalled there. Kicker Juan Guzman easily connected on a 30 yard field goal however to give the Bearcats a 17-7 lead. The Vikings tried a field goal of their own just before half but it was blocked.

The Bearcats opened the 3rd quarter with the ball at their own 36. A long drive ensued that ate up the first 8:26 of the quarter and ended with a 2 yard TD run by William Bradford. The drive included a well-designed screen pass to Anthony Villalobos, two runs by him, plus a nice run by Allen who led the Bearcat running attack with 83 yards on the night. San Mateo appeared in command now at 24-7. The defense looked to lock down the game for San Mateo on Mills next possession. Blemur delivered an 11 yard sack on Mills 9 yard line forcing the Vikings to punt yet again. Mills had a great punt however that gave San Mateo possession on their own 34 as the 3rd quarter was winding down. That is when it got a little interesting.

San Mateo turned the ball over to the Vikings on a fumble and at their own 49 to start the 4th quarter. On Mills next play they scored on a 59 yard run to narrow the lead to 24-14 with 11:12 to play in the game. San Mateo could not move the ball on their next possession and a long punt return by Mills put them at the San Mateo 14. A few plays later they scored to cut the lead to 24-21. Bearcat kicker Juan Guzman, who had to be called into duty to also return kicks due to multiple Bearcat injuries, made the play of the game on the ensuing kickoff. Taking the ball in on his own 12, he darted to the left side of the field making a dazzling move on one would-be tackler at the 25 and then basically just out ran the rest of the Vikings, having to put a final move on the last defender at the Mills 42. The touchdown return put the Bearcats up by 9 after a failed 2 point conversion attempt. It was enough to keep Mills at bay as the defense preserved the 30-12 victory to give the SMHS squad a 6-2 record heading into next Saturday’s 90th edition of the Little Big Game versus Burlingame. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m. at San Mateo High.

Meet Recap

The Varsity Girls played in the first round of the PAL Team Championships against Aragon. In two meetings during the regular season, each team won a match, so the Bearcats knew that they had a tough battle ahead.

The first loss came as Singles #1, Sophomore Grace Wang, had to retire due to injury. But Singles #3, Senior and Co-Captain Tessa Chou put one in the win column for San Mateo with her fast and easy bagel win 6-0, 6-0. And just as Chou has been an expected win at every match for the Bearcats, Seniors and Co-Captains Aida Lowe & Lauren Young, got the other expected win on the Doubles #1 court. Lowe and Young lost only 3 games in their straight set victory. Singles #2, Freshman Sarah Fung-Smith, also had an easy win 6-0, 6-2.

On each of the remaining three courts, the Bearcats fought hard, forcing a 12th game in at least one set. Junior Lian Ting, who has done well moving between singles and doubles courts, paired with Sophomore Jeevika Adda as Doubles #2. Ting and Adda were down 2-5 in the second set, but won the next two games to make it 4-5. But Aragon didn’t let up and avoided another 12-game set by unfortunately finishing off the Bearcats 4-6.

San Mateo finished a respectable 3rd place in the Bay Division of PAL behind Menlo-Atherton and Carlmont, with a 9-5 record. The Varsity Girls look forward to another strong season in 2018.
