Game Recap

Division champs! Great season by the JV squad, they went undefeated in Division play and finished the year 7-3. They completely dominated the Capuchino Mustangs, by controlling both sides of the ball, executing their game plan on offense, defense and special teams. The offense controlled the game with a punishing rushing attack led by Lucas Castillo and Omar Maithaluni, the defense created turnovers, and special teams joined the party with a 55 yard punt return by Michael Vendel.

Congratulations to the 2017 JV squad for winning the division, we look forward to watching next years JV team defend the title. Go Bearcats!

Game Recap

CAP EDGES THE BEARCATS
In San Mateo’s final game of the season Friday night, the Capuchino Mustangs posted a 14-10 victory over the Bearcats, giving SMHS a 6-4 record for the 2017 season. The Bearcats have been unlucky this year with key players out or banged up but they stayed in this game and even gave themselves a chance to win in the final minutes. They came up short on an off night for reliable senior QB Jose Ontiveros who was one of those playing with soreness from last weekend’s tough game against Burlingame.

The night started well for the Bearcats. On their second possession of the game, San Mateo took over on their 49 following a short punt. The O-Line, keyed all year by Steven Escalante, Gino Semenza, Manny Burgeno, Elvis Aquillar and Ari Blemur, opened up some nice holes for running back Jonathan Ramirez who reeled of consecutive gains of 12, 10 and 4 yards. Ontiveros then threw a 25-yard pass to Anthony Villalobos who worked himself free in the Cap end zone. Capuchino came back in the second quarter however with a 25 yard TD pass of their own by Trey Zahursky to knot the game at 7. The Bearcats drove to Cap’s 27 yard line with 26 seconds left in the half, but an errant Ontiveros pass was picked off in the end zone.

On their first possession of the third quarter, the Bearcats struck again. Starting at their 19, the drive included 38 yards on the ground by Ramirez, Villalobos and Joel Fakava and a nice catch and run for 37 yards by Jake Jeffries from Ontiveros. The drive stalled at the 6 yard line however where Jeffries kicked a 23 yard field goal to give the Bearcats a 10-7 lead.

In the 4th quarter, two 4th down plays determined the final outcome. On 4th and 1 on Cap’s 29 yard line, San Mateo was unable to convert and Cap took over on downs. Three plays after that, the Mustangs faced their own 4th and 1 on their 38 but they picked up a first on what would be the winning TD drive. Three plays later, a 41 yard scramble by backup QB Brandon Mailangi put the ball at the Bearcat 2 and the Mustangs punched it in from there. San Mateo had one more chance when Ontiveros hooked up with Gui Pains on a 50 yard strike to the Cap 29, but a couple of costly penalties pushed them back 10 yards and then another interception sealed the victory for the Mustangs.

Game Recap

The Bearcats dropped their final game of the season to their cross-town rivals by a score of 20-6. Despite the defeat the Bearcats season saw some growth and steps in the right directions. After losing a majority of their roster from last year due to graduation, this year was all about getting some playing time for the younger guys. With only four seniors slated to leave this year the future will be heavily dependent on the youth movement that grew this season.

Offensively the Bearcats were led by team MVP Jacob Wetherbee’s five goals with an additional goal contributed by Preston Lo.

Before the game the Bearcats also acknowledged some of their swimmers who earned league recognition. Jacob Wetherbee was selected for the Ocean Division 1st team, Preston Lo for the Ocean Division 2nd team, and Joey Borges for the Ocean Division Honorable Mention.

Game Recap

The Aragon offense was unfortunately too much for the Bearcats, dropping the season finale to the Dons 19 – 2. Despite the defeat the Bearcats mostly first-timer roster ended the season with lots of playing time in the pool and the fundamentals of the game beginning to take shape. A bond was formed that will help the roster really gel in the upcoming years.

In the finale the Bearcats were led offensively by Dane Anderson’s two goals.

Game Recap

BEARCATS LOSE TOUGH BATTLE
In the 90th edition of the Little Big Game vs. Burlingame for the Paw trophy, SMHS fought hard but ultimately suffered too many key injuries to hang on to a slim lead. Leading 3-0 at halftime, the Bearcats lost the battle 20-10 before a large crowd on their home turf.

Already without one of their leading receivers Kevin Grant, a bad omen occurred in pregame warm-ups when starting running back Jonathan Ramirez tweaked his ankle. Although he still played Saturday, Ramirez did not have his usual solid game. That was just the beginning of the Bearcat’s injury report. Quarterback Jose Ontiveros was hurt late in the 2nd quarter as was defensive end Ari Blemur and starting running back and safety D’hay Allen. All three are seniors and have been key starters to this season’s winning ways. They would all would return to action in the 2nd half but none of the trio were playing at full strength. Ontiveros was hurt again in the 3rd quarter and junior Matt Angel, having recently recovered from shoulder surgery, was moved from TE to QB where he played his first two years on JV. But in the 4th quarter Angel went down hard when he was blindsided while attempting a pass and was helped off the field.

The game was a hard fought defensive battle in the first half, with San Mateo accounting for the only score. The Bearcat defense was solid the entire half, three times repelling 4th down attempts by the Panthers, one of those times on 4th and 1 at the Bearcat 9. San Mateo’s score came on their very first possession. After stopping BHS on 4th and 4 on the Panther 46, Allen broke off a 24 yard run that put the Bearcat’s inside the Panther 25. The drive stopped there however and Juan Guzman easily connected on a 38 yard field goal, his longest to date and adding to what has been an outstanding season for the junior kicker, punter, and free safety.

The 2nd half began with the teams trading punts. On San Mateo’s second possesion, Ontiveros connected on a 42 yard pass play to WR Jake Jeffries to reach the Panther 17. Looking like they were going to add to their 3-0 lead, things suddenly turned against the Bearcats. Ontiveros was hit while in the act of throwing and the pass was picked off by the Panthers at their own 13. BHS then marched the length of the field and scored on a 4 yard run. The hold on the extra point was off however, so the lead was only 3 points at 6-0 where it stayed entering the 4th quarter. Burlingame’s first possession in the 4th resulted in another drive and touchdown to widen their lead to 13-3. San Mateo looked to get back in the game starting their next possession on their 35, but that is when Angel took his hard hit while attempting to pass. The ball popped up before Angel could get the pass off and a BHS player grabbed it out of the air and ran it in for their 3rd and final TD.

San Mateo added a late touchdown after blocking a Burlingame punt in Panther territory. A few plays later, even with Ontiveros banged up, he managed to throw a nice 25 yard pass in the end zone to Jeffries to make the final score 20-10. The Bearcats finish their season with a league game at Capuchino next Friday with an early 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
