The Varsity Girls, despite missing its regular Singles #3 player for the second consecutive game, came up with their biggest win of the season so far.
Doubles #1, Seniors and Co-Captains Aida Lowe and Lauren Young got the first win for San Mateo with their straight-set win, where they lost only 2 games total to the Panthers. Singles #2, Freshman Sarah Fung-Smith and Singles #3, Junior Lian Ting secured the next two Bearcat wins, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively. Playing at Singles #4 was Sophomore Hannah Battat, who moved up in the lineup and filled in on the Singles courts for the second consecutive game. Battat played hard for each point and came up with a big straight-set win, 7-5, 6-2.
The most exciting matches of the day were on the remaining Doubles courts. Playing #2, Junior Mahak Bindal and Senior Emily McHugh lost the first set, but came back strong to win the second set 6-2. With the match not being decided yet, they had to play a full third set. McHugh showed off her nice groundstrokes while Bindal showed her prowess at the net and her speed, as she chased down quite a few Panther balls during long rallies back and forth. In the end, Bindal and McHugh prevailed, closing out the third set 6-2, to give San Mateo its fifth win of the day.
The last match was on the Doubles #3 court. Sophomores Jeevika Adda and Nicole Hong won the first set 6-2 and were up 5-4 in the second set. But the Panthers came back and won the next three games to force a super tie-breaker. With their teammates cheering them on, Adda and Hong dug deep and won the super tie-breaker 10-6 to complete the sweep on the Doubles courts, and to give San Mateo a respectable 5-2 record at mid-season.
The Varsity Girls hope to get their sixth win when they travel to Hillsdale to face the Knights on Tuesday, October 3rd. Go Bearcats!
