San Mateo High School
Great game by the JV squad beating the Mission Bears in historic Kezar Stadium. Breaking a two game losing streak the SM Bearcats needed to get back to their winning ways as they approached conference play. With a strong running game and stout defense the SM Bearcats won their second game and improved their record to 2-2. Go Bearcats!
The Bearcats started the game with a great kick off return by Joshua Cervantes, setting up the offense to start the game on the 50 yard line. With a short field the offense quickly moved the ball down the field into scoring position. The Bearcats capped the drive off with a screen pass from Luke Bergstrom to Lucas Castillo for a 20 yard TD.
The Mission Bears came roaring back on the next drive, they quickly moved the ball downfield into scoring position, eventually scoring on a TD pass to the corner of the end zone.
The Bearcats defense settled down in the 2nd quarter with great defense line play. The D-Line set the tone in the 2nd quarter led by Spencer Unga and Soane Kolokihakaufisi, causing havoc at the point of attack, disrupting plays and hitting the QB. The tough defensive play allowed the offense to settle in and allow it’s power running game to take control of the game. With the power running game taking the game over the Bearcats drove the ball the length of the field ending the drive with TD run by Manu Finau gashing the center of the defense for a 10 yard TD. Bearcats went into halftime with a 14-6 lead.
Both teams came out of halftime fired up and read to play. The Mission Bears received the ball in the 3rd quarter and took the opening drive the length of the field into scoring position, ending in another TD pass in the corner end zone.
With Bearcats lead shrinking, the offense once again took control of the game with their rushing attack, led by Lucas Castillo. On their second drive of the quarter the Bearcats drove the ball down the field into the red zone, ending with the Bearcats calling a reverse to Lucas Castillo, scoring on a 20 yard rushing TD for the Bearcats.
With the Bearcats leading by 8 points the defense continued to dominate the game, preventing the Bears from getting their offense started. The offense continued to move the ball on the ground, unfortunately a turnover prevented them from scoring again in the 4th quarter. With Mission Bears running out of time and trying their best to tie the game up, the defense once again shut down the offense, ending the game with an Interception by Luke Bergstrom on the 50 yard line. The Bearcats took the ball over and ran the clock out, game over!
